Lactulose
Overview
Lactulose is a very effective laxative that is commonly used in veterinary medicine. It is frequently used in the treatment and prevention of constipation in pets.
Lactulose also is used to treat some types of liver disease.
Form
Lactulose is available as a liquid suspension for oral administration. Lactulose may be administered as an enema by veterinarians.
Side Effects
Flatulence and stomach cramps are potential side effects of lactulose. Diarrhea may occur, especially if animals are given high doses of the product.
Monitoring
Pets should be monitored for side effects, and for improvement of symptoms. Contact your veterinarian if you suspect your pet is suffering side effects from lactulose.
Contact your veterinarian if lactulose has not produced the intended effect (regular bowel movements in constipated animals, improved mental status in animals with liver problems) within 24 hours.
