Overview
In veterinary medicine, sulfadimethoxine is used primarily to treat coccidia (Isospora) in puppies and kittens. Courses of sulfadimethoxine generally last from 3 to 21 days.
Sulfadimethoxine also may be used as an antibiotic, but this is not common in veterinary medicine.
Sulfadimethoxine is currently considered an inferior treatment option for coccidia. A different drug, ponazuril, is preferred.
Form
Sulfadimethoxine is readily available as pills or in a liquid formulation. Compounding pharmacies may be able to produce palatable flavored suspensions.
Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upset is the most common side effect. However, this side effect is rare. Pets that take sulfadimethoxine to treat coccidia often experience a resolution of pre-existing diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset as the parasites are eliminated.
Other side effects include skin rashes, decreased tear production, and urinary crystals.
Monitoring
Long term use of sulfadiemthoxine is rare. Pets on extended courses of the medication may require periodic blood and urine tests.
